Truth and Reconciliation Day - Sacred Fire
Date
Tuesday September 30, 20251:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Location
Agnes Benidickson FieldOn September 30th, Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a day to honor the children who were taken from their families and sent to residential schools, as well as the survivors, their families, and communities. These schools were part of a harmful system that tried to erase Indigenous cultures and identities.
This day is also known as Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots movement that began to raise awareness about the lasting impact of residential schools and the need for meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island (a name many Indigenous Peoples use to refer to North America).
As part of this important day, the university will offer events, activities, and learning opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. You are encouraged to take part in these to better understand Canada’s history, show support, and reflect on the steps we can all take toward reconciliation—on campus and beyond.
One of the most meaningful things you can do is to begin or continue your own learning about the history and current realities of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Awareness and education are key steps in supporting reconciliation.
We invite you to join in this journey of learning and reflection.
Join us on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Agnes Benidickson Field for a Sacred Fire ceremony in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This is a time for reflection, respect, and community as we honor the children, families, and survivors of the residential school system. All are welcome. 🧡
Please note from 1:00-2:00pm, the QUIC will be closed to attend the sacred fire. QUIC will also not be hosting drop-in and scheduled appointments for immigration and career advising. If you are in need of support, please feel free to contact isa@queensu.ca.
