Country Representative Training
Description: This training is available to those involved in the Country Representative Program. A Country Representative is a student volunteer - an international student, a Canadian or a resident of Canada who has lived, studied or worked abroad within the last three years for a period of at least 2 months, or a student who has represented Queen’s on one of its official exchanges—who has lived in a country other than Canada and who serves as part of a team of resource people for the Education Abroad Program and the International Education activities of QUIC.

Cultural Skills for the Canadian Context
Description: Moving from one culture or country to another to study or work often means facing challenges in learning about the new culture and the way things are done. The Socio-cultural Competency Training Program (SCT) has been developed to address the challenges that accompany the transition into a new culture. This three-part workshop series, based on the SCT Program, is designed to assist newcomers to live and work successfully in the Canadian culture. Sessions include:
- Communicating with people from the Canadian culture in a way that earns their respect and trust.
- Adapting your professional skills (both technical and managerial) to fit local conditions and constraints
- Learning ways to be generally at ease in Canadian culture.
Session length: 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. (2 hours per session)

Intercultural Training Certificate Program
Description: The Certificate Program aims to prepare participants with the skills and knowledge needed for respectful and effective intercultural interactions.
Members of the QUIC community are invited to participate in this series of intercultural training sessions that will introduce the concepts of culture, self-knowledge, as well as basic intercultural skills and knowledge that will help participants succeed in an intercultural environment. Sessions are repeated in the Fall and Winter Term. Space is limited; reserve your place by emailing quic.training@queensu.ca.
Session length: 1.5 hours per session

Intercultural Begins with You: You will learn what difference culture makes and how to recognize your own cultural identity. |

Measuring Your Intercultural Sensitivity - An Introduction to the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI): The IDI is a 50-question online survey that measures intercultural sensitivity based on the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS). In the session, we will use this tool to help us understand our own intercultural sensitivity, as a group and as individuals; we will also learn how we can increase our sensitivity and become more effective in our intercultural interactions. |

Between Cultures - It Takes a Skill or Two: In the session, we will explore the dimensions of intercultural competence and introduce skills that may help you succeed in an intercultural environment. We will consider the links between cultural communication tools, contextual understanding, interpretation and the dimensions of culture. |

Understanding Conflict - An Introduction to the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory: When conflict arises within groups, families, communities, etc. it is often due to the different approaches that individuals use to resolve disputes. The Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory is a tool that helps us to understand our own approach to conflict resolution, as well as other approaches we may encounter, with the goal of using this understanding to prevent conflict from escalating. |

English Language Support Program (ELS)
Description: The ELS program matches English-speaking volunteers with Queen’s students, visiting faculty or their families who wish to improve their English conversation skills in one-on-one sessions or conversation group meetings. Training for ELS volunteers provides an overview of the program outlining the expectations for volunteers as well as resources available to assist them in their sessions.
Session Length: 40 mins

General QUIC Volunteer Training
Description: The session provides an introduction to QUIC, as well as to the concept and realities of volunteering in a Canadian context. Benefits of volunteering at the QUIC, expectations, privacy protection and rights of volunteers are outlined.
Session Length: 40 mins

Income Tax Volunteer Training
Description: Training will be given by staff of QUIC and the Canada Revenue Agency. Volunteers will make themselves available to students for an hour or two a week for the months of March and April.

International Educators Training Program (IETP):
Description: The IETP provides competency-based training for various groups of international educators: those entering the field of international student advising, study/work abroad advising, as well as professionals at a mid-career level; it has also developed a course for individuals not directly involved in the profession but who are increasingly required to be aware and effective in an intercultural workplace, and special focus workshops that deal with issues relevant to a broad range of professionals. Finally in partnership with the University of British Columbia, it offers courses from UBC's Certificate in Intercultural Studies program, as well as training on the internationalization of the campus and classroom developed at Thompson Rivers University.
Session length: Full day sessions from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (one week)

International Resource Library Volunteers Training
Description: This training prepares participants to volunteer at the QUIC International Resource Library. Library functions and operations procedures are explained, as well as program expectations.
Session length: 30 minutes

OCASP Form 1 Completion for Travellers
Description: With the implementation of the Off-Campus Activity Safety Policy (OCASP), any undergraduate student travelling across the border is required to complete the OCASP Form 1. This presents some challenges, and QUIC offers training sessions for those travellers whose Form 1 must get finel approval from the QUIC Director. The training walks the traveller through proper completion of each section of the form, as well as the completion of a thorough risk analysis based on the traveller's destination.

Pre-departure Orientation for Study/Work/Travel Abroad Participants
Description: To support Queen's participants in their preparations for study, work and travel abroad, QUIC offers an on-line pre-departure orientation. All undergraduate students taking part in Queen's University sanctioned international activities are required to participate in an on-line pre-departure orientation as part of their enrolment in the Queen's Emergency Support Program. All other participants in Queen's University sanctioned international activities are strongly encouraged to participate. You will receive information on travel logistics, cross-cultural adjustment, health insurance, the Queen's Emergency Support Program, the Off-Campus Activity Safety Policy and more.
Registration: To complete the on-line pre-departure orientation, please enroll in the Emergency Support Program and sign up for a pre-departure in the appropriate section.

Program Emergency Contact Training:
Description: The Program Emergency Contact (PEC) is the emergency contact person designated by a faculty, department or group at Queen's for each program in which a study/work/travel abroad participant may be involved. QUIC provides a training session that prepares these individuals to carry out the required tasks of a PEC (e.g. address the on-going dimensions of the emergency; raise the awareness of the existence of and procedures pertaining to the Emergency Protocol; evaluate and report on the process of addressing the emergency; etc).
