The next Summer Institute will be held June 8-13, 2014 on Queen’s University’s main campus in Kingston, Ontario.

Course offerings

The IETP Summer Institute offers a variety of courses and workshops for professionals working directly in international education, or simply in an intercultural workplace. Some courses focus on a post-secondary educational context, others are more general. Some courses are better suited to those working in Canadian workplaces, others will appeal to Canadians and non-Canadians alike. If you have questions about what course is best suited to your training needs, please contact the IETP office.

The following courses  have been developed by the IETP; their general focus is on the post-secondary workplace and the Canadian context:

IETP I: Advising & Programming for New Professionals in the Field of International Education - Working With Incoming International Students

Dates: June 8-13

Fee: $1750 + 13% HST

This course is designed for those who are new to the field of international education and have been in their present positions for fewer than two years; they will work in an educational setting, in the area(s) of advising and/or programming for international students coming to their campuses. IETP I: Building Intercultural Skills and Approaches for International Education

Dates: June 8-13

Fee: $1750 + 13% HST

Participants in this course will gain a broad understanding of internationalization and the context in which it takes place; they will explore key concepts and terms related to intercultural competence; they will understand the value of the intercultural and international setting and appreciate the challenges and opportunities it offers. IETP I: Communication Skills Development for Working with Cultural Newcomers: A Socio-cultural Competency Training (SCT) Approach

Dates: June 8-13

Fee: $1750 + 13% HST

This course will help participants develop the skills they need to guide those who have recently arrived in a new culture to adapt more easily and more successfully in academic and professional settings using the SCT model. More…

IETP II: Advanced Topics in International Education

Dates: June 8-13

Fee: $1750 + 13% HST

International educators work within many frameworks institutional, national, international, global, community, sustainable and strategic are among the many lens through which our work is viewed. This course will examine the relationships and interconnections inherent in international education and propose that adopting an integrated approach is not just key to the work of the international educator but truly the core. Dates: June 9-10

40 hours: 2 days in class, 5 weeks online

Dates: June 12-13

Comprehensive Campus Internationalization

Dates: June 9-10, 2014

Fee: $700 + 13% HST

Comprehensive internationalization does not occur as a result of successful recruiting efforts, student mobility, or transnational partnerships.  Although these are critical elements of internationalization, they do not necessarily integrate international perspectives or intercultural learning outcomes for the majority of a campus community. Dates: June 8-10
