Beware of fake cheques (and other types of fraud)!

If you receive payments by cheque (or some money orders), the money is not immediately in your account. Students have been cheated in the past by people who send cheques where the money never arrives. Usually, these ‘scams’ involve an overpayment where the scammer expects you to transfer money back to them. If you are asked to return extra funds, or transfer money as part of a ‘secret shopper’ job, be suspicious. At minimum, you should speak to your bank and find out when they can guarantee that the money is in your account.

If you have been a victim of fraud like this, we invite you to talk to our Advisers. You can also report it to the Kingston Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
