Queen’s University and the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC) offer many services and activities that support international students, visiting scholars, researchers and postdoctoral fellows during their time in Canada.  The health and safety of the participants is an important part of the planning of these services and events.

Emergency Support Services at Queen’s University

• The Assistant Director and International Student Advisor at the Queen's University International Centre provide immigration and taxation assistance and act as advocates for international students/scholars on campus.

• The Cross-Cultural Counselor provides support and guidance for international students.

• Queen’s Security (613-533-6111) provides emergency assistance 24 hours a day.

• Assistance Phones are located throughout the campus and offer no-charge direct dialing to a number of Queen’s services.

• Outdoor Emergency Phones are located throughout the campus and are identified by blue lights.

•  The Student Patrol Program, part of Queen’s Security, helps patrols the campus on foot during the evening.

• Walkhome's student-staff will escort you from one point to another in central Kingston during the evening at no charge.

• Queen’s First Aid offers First Aid assistance on campus providing prompt response that is both confidential and free of charge.

• Student Health, Counseling and Disability Services provides non-life threatening medical assistance, disability/accommodation assistance and resources as well as general and specialized counseling services.

• The Human Rights Office promotes human rights and takes action where acts of discrimination or harassment occur.

• University Chaplain provides assistance with spiritual counseling for all faiths and is the contact for the Inter-Faith Council. For further resources you can also visit our Religious and Spiritual Support page.

• Queen's Pandemic Preparedness site provides regularly-updated information about the institutions preparations for any potential pandemics.

• Queen's Student Affairs Division provides general information about student safety and community living as well as an introduction to support services for Queen's students in distress.

In case of an emergency

If students/scholars are in a situation where their welfare is threatened, they should:

• Contact the local emergency services for assistance – dial 911 from any telephone

• Contact Queen’s Security at 613-533-6111

• Contact the Queen's University International Centre at 613-533-2604

• Contact their local Embassy for assistance.

Health Insurance

All international students/scholars must enroll in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) unless they can provide proof of equivalent coverage and are granted an exemption.

The undergraduate student government Alma Mater Society provides a number of important services, including supplemental health and dental insurance.

The graduate student government Society of Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) provides a number of important services, including supplemental health and dental insurance.

Emergency Action Plan

While we do not anticipate an emergency, students/scholars should make themselves aware of the following, either when they arrive on campus, or prior to their departure for Canada:

• The location and contact information of the local police. Dial 911, in the case of an emergency.

• Queen’s Security Hotline 613-533-6111 provides emergency assistance 24 hours a day.

• The Queen's University International Centre, Room 117, John Deutsch University Centre, 613-533-2604 

• Contact information for your travel providers (eg. airline, bus company, etc.) as well as information regarding changing/obtaining tickets in Canada.

• Address, telephone and fax numbers of the Embassy of your country of citizenship or an alternate agency if an Embassy is not available.  To learn more about your countries’ Embassies in Canada visit the Department of Foreign Affairs website.

• The location of a bank that will provide cash advances on credit or debit cards.

• Local contacts for support (friends, other students)

• Possible itinerary for departing Canada (leave copies with local and family contacts)

• Emergency contact information for family and friends at home
